Play Way - The Montessori Method

At Lotus International School we support the development of the whole child through inquiry, exploration and play-centered. Our goal is to meet the academic, social, emotional, physical and cultural needs of every child. Through the Montessori Programme the children are encouraged to view their world through an internationally-minded lens and have activities covering Motor Skills, Sensory Plays, Eye & Hand Co-ordination. The concepts of learning are webbed with activities and hands on exploration encourages interactive learning. Literacy, Numeracy & General Awareness are the areas of specific subjects. The curriculum is thus designed to nurture the child in all dimensions of his or her life—moral, cognitive, emotional, imaginative, aesthetic, social and physical aspects supported with Montessori and play. The approach is based on developmental principles and emphasizes the responsibility of adults to help the child actualize his inner potential. The role of the teacher is one of guide and observer, whose ultimate goal is to intervene less and less as the child develops. The teacher builds an atmosphere of calm, order and joy in the classroom and encourages the children in all their efforts, thus promoting self-confidence and discipline. Knowing when to observe and intervene is a skill of our Montessori teachers.

Phonics

Speaking and listening are the building blocks for reading and writing, so listening and talking to the child is essential. We use a fun and child centered approach to teaching literacy through Synthetic Phonics. We teach children to recognise the sounds that each letter (or group of letters) makes, how to put them together to read words and how to break them apart to spell words. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, this multi-sensory method is very motivating for children, enabling them to become fluent readers
